Southwestern Pottery Hand Coiled Buff Clay Jar and Pitcher
Details
These Southwest pottery pieces were hand coiled of clay and scraped smooth. They have a prehistoric look and feel, reminiscent of Anasazi or perhaps Mesa Verde. The clay used is actually gray but is slipped in a buff color that is darker in some areas than others. The narrow line designs appear black in some lighting and deep blue in sunlight. They are unglazed , thin-walled and very well made by an unknown potter.
The pitcher has a bulbous body, high cylindrical neck with a very slightly flared rim and a thick strap handle from neck to body. It has a few fire marks on it and a red sticker on the bottom that indicates it was formerly in an established collection. It's 8 3/4 inches tall, 7 1/4 inches across the belly (22 1/2 inches in circumference) and has a 3 1/2 inch diameter mouth. It weighs 2 1/4 pounds and is in very good condition, with just a few tiny nicks and a chip on the rim that can be seen in our photos, but no chunks, cracks or hairlines.
The matching jar is 8 inches tall, about 6 1/2 inches across the low belly (21 1/2 inches circumference) and has a 3 1/4 inch diameter mouth. It weighs 3/4 of a pound and is also in very good condition but has an old tape mark below the rim (shown in our photos).
These large and handsome pieces of handmade pottery look great with Southwest or Native American collections and décor, of course, but also in modern settings.
