Indigenous Vintage Wall Mask Carved and Painted
Details
This hand carved Indonesian wall mask portrays a tribal man with an eagle headdress. Measuring 22 inches tall, 15 inches wide and 12 inches deep to the top of the eagle's beak, the mask weighs just over 7 pounds (!).
The mask is carved from a curved piece of native meranti wood, 2 1/4 inches thick at the top and beautifully painted in dark red, forest green and black. The carving is very good in quality and shows the marks of the tool that was used to make it. The artist carved the initials PJ on the reverse side of the mask, along with a carved symbol that appears to us to represent a figure under the roof of a dwelling. There is a braided cord attached on the back for hanging, although the carving props nicely on a shelf or any surface with a backing, such as a wall. It is in excellent condition, with no breaks, cracks or missing pieces.
It is difficult to convey the impressive size of this carving. The curvature of the wood projects the details in such a bold way that this very large mask is a major focal point in any setting.
