Green Frog Art Pottery Bowl
Green Frog Art Pottery Bowl

This very interesting vintage pottery bowl was hand carved to represent a full-bodied frog. The head projects from the smooth surface, flanked by the front legs and stippled areas representing frog skin. The other side of the bowl displays his folded rear legs, with frog skin on either side. All of this is in relief; the head, for example, juts out 1 1/4 inches.
The bowl was hand turned from stoneware and given a matte green glaze, so appropriate for a frog. The glaze is streaky in spots, definitely hand done, as are the masterfully carved details. The workmanship reminds us of a Chinese Yue ware water pot from the Western Jin Dynasty (265-317) that we saw online recently. It is similarly carved with a frog in fine detail.
This pottery piece stands 4 inches tall and 5 inches across, not including the relief decorations. Both the mouth opening with its raised rim and the dry foot ring are 2 3/4 inches wide. The bowl weighs 1 1/4 pounds and is in excellent condition, with no damage whatsoever.
