This handsome triple-tier antique wood frame was handmade in the 1880's during the Aesthetic Movement. The outer frame is gilded compo, with a carved leaf design surrounded by beading on its inner and outer edges. The middle frame is hand painted in faux tortoise, while the innermost frame is cove molding in lemon gilt. The outer measurements of the frame are 14 1/4 inches by 12 1/4 inches and it's 2 inches thick. The picture size is 9 1/2 inches by 7 1/2 inches. The weight is 2 1/2 pounds.

Under the wavy glass is a print of the original hand colored stipple engraving by French artist Jean-Louis Prévost (1760-1810). Depicted are cabbage roses, purple iris, thistle and daffodils from his Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits {Collection of Flowers and Fruits} done in Paris in 1805. This vintage reproduction is from the 1930's-1940's by Sidney Z. Lucas of NY and NJ.

The frame is in excellent condition, with a small missing piece of the carving on the upper left corner that was touched up with gold at some point. There is also some wear to the wood on the corners. We mention this for accuracy, as the frame displays beautifully. The back is a thin slab of wood, held on by 2 black nails. There is an eye hook for hanging, newer and as a found. It would be a simple matter to add a hanging wire if you prefer. There is a small hole to the left of the thistle (shown) but the print is otherwise in very good shape, albeit a bit faded.

PLEASE NOTE: An almost identical frame is shown on page 5b on the website AntiqueFrames8x10. You must scroll down on the page ...it's the one on the left framing the pansies.
