Desert Sand Southwest Style Stoneware Bottle
Details
This interesting stoneware bottle vase was wheel thrown of speckled rough clay in a desert sand color. It was then decorated with raised symbols, Southwestern in style, that were painted white; they're repeated three times around the center, along with a band of stepped rectangles that encircles the neck. A clear final glaze was then applied; the surface is bumpy to the touch and the embossed designs are, also.
The symbolism continues with the inscribed marks on the dry bottom. There is the date 4-79; a 9 next to an inverted triangle; an outline of what may be a buffalo or some other animal and a Z with a straight line on either side of it. There may be meaning in any or all of these symbols, but it's elusive.
This stoneware vase measures 7 inches tall, 1 3/4 inches across the mouth rim and has a 3 1/4 inch diameter base. The shoulder circumference is 15 inches and it weighs 1 3/4 pounds. In excellent condition, it's a handsome, decorative piece of handmade pottery.
