Wood Sculpture of Lake Trout on Burl Base Signed

Item number: PYH 5620

This handsome sculpture of a leaping lake trout was hand carved from a solid piece of beautifully grained walnut. Permanently mounted on a burl base with a brass connecting rod, the fish displays a sense of motion and energy that makes it such an eye-catching work of art. It's signed on the bottom, carved into the wood with a pair of initials reading "FA" in an Arts and Crafts type script (Fritz Abplanalp?).

The trout itself measures 11 1/2 long and 4 inches high from the top to bottom fins. The burl base is 5 3/4 inches long and 4 inches front to back (these measurements are approximate due to its irregular shape.) At the mouth, the piece is 6 1/2 inches high, at the tail it's 5 3/4 inches high, and the weight is 1 pound, 10 ounces.

The fish is in excellent condition, with no damage, while the burl base has a few chips (shown very magnified in our photos). These are all on one side and reveal the pale red wood underneath the surface. They do not detract, however, from the beauty of this handmade vintage artwork.
