Christopher Powell is a prominent contemporary art potter based in Westerville, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. He founded his studio, C. Powell Pottery, in 1994, just two years before he made this beautiful lidded jar that's very much in the aesthetic of the Arts and Crafts movement. To quote Chris Powell: "After 30+ years of working in clay, I am still attracted to strong simple forms with beautiful surfaces."

The green glaze on this jar and its lid is not only matte, but velvety to the touch. It's not an overall solid color, but is randomly shadowed and shaded with a darker hue. The ovoid body and the lid with round raised knob were formed of white stoneware clay with a fired on C. Powell signature, dated 1996, all identifiers of his pieces from 1996 to 2001.

The display card and informational booklet came tucked into this piece and we'll include them. We've shown both in our photos, so we won't repeat the information, just point out the original price of $24 (!) 23 years ago. The jar is about 3 1/2 inches deep and has a 3 inch diameter mouth. The dry foot has 3 notches and is 2 1/2 inches across. With the lid on, it's 6 inches tall to the top of the knob. The lid has two pinprick glaze pops on one side, one on the other and another on the lid, all of which we mention for accuracy. It is in excellent, like-new condition with no post-studio damage. This is an outstanding example of art pottery inspired by the Arts and Crafts era by an exceptional studio ceramic artist.
