Studio Stoneware Art Pottery Lidded Box by David Petrakovitz

Ceramic artist and sculptor David Petrakovitz was born in 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. While in college, he took a sculpture class and fell in love with the art. He made an auspicious start to his future career when he sold a small sculpture to Mrs. Edsel Ford. He met his wife, painter Joyce Petrakovitz, while they were both attending the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit; David was studying ceramics there. After graduation, they started a pottery studio together and spent the next 25 years selling their pieces at art fairs and galleries across the U.S. In 1998, David returned to sculpture and Joyce to her painting.

This jewel of a stoneware lidded box is abstractly and unexpectedly formed of two cyma curves, which give the box a very modernist look. The lid is so precisely fitted to the box that it can only be placed on it one way. It's decorated with multiple glazes, with a painterly floral design on the lid against a speckled olive green background. The greenish brown band has a metallic sheen, topping a black area with peach colored daubs, giving the impression the flower is growing from the soil. The sides of the lid and the box are partly glazed in the olive green and partly in black, with lines of grooves adding further flair. The dry bottom was signed by hand "Petrakovitz."

The box measures about 7 1/4 inches long from endpoint to endpoint, 6 inches wide across the widest part and 3 1/2 inches tall with the lid on. The interior depth of the bottom is 2 1/2 inches and with the lid weighs in at 2 1/2 pounds. It is in outstanding condition, with no pre- or post- production damage. It's an exciting example of a very talented artist's work.
