This elegant print is an original aquatint engraving depicting a scene in a European town (Switzerland...France...Germany?) with its majestic clock tower. The streets are wet, just after a rain, and the sky is cloudy as three women come out to visit while two more townsfolk stand under the archway. The colors are vibrant and unfaded, the plate mark crisp and the 2 inch wide wooden frame restrained and unadorned. Its narrow filet is painted creamy white; the broad, flat molding is next, painted taupe; and the outermost molding is covered in a distressed gold. The mid-century engraving itself was printed on heavy, oatmeal colored paper.

The engraving was pencil signed (illegibly to us) by the artist on the lower right margin, while to the left, also in pencil, is the edition number 31/100. The framed measurements are 17 1/2 inches by 21 1/2 inches. The sight size is 13 1/2 by 17 1/2 and the artwork weighs 2 pounds 6 ounces. Our framer applied new dust paper to the reverse, new coated hanging wire and included hanging hardware, also (the old paper was badly torn and the wire rusted). Due to the vagaries of lighting, the photo of the engraving on the wall over the French chair is darker than the other photos, which are faithful to the actual artwork (at least on our monitor).

While the frame has a few minor nicks and scratches on the gilded edges, it displays handsomely, as does the engraving, which is in excellent condition. The glass is excellent, also. This print is versatile wall décor, compatible with a variety of different interiors.
