Stoneware Vintage STEARNS ART POTTERY Modern Weed Pot
This stoneware weed pot combines an excellent form with deeply carved designs and superb glazes. The earthy palette of speckled brick red over greenish-gold provides a natural background for the three sets of incised tendrils, each different from the others, that radiate down from the short neck, which is the same red color, striped with brown. The rolled lip surrounding the 1/2 inch wide mouth is greenish-gold with a few speckles, as is the 1 3/4 inch wide band carved around the middle. The band has drips of red at the top and a line of dark brown at the bottom of it (which appears bluish in one of our photos, due to the vagaries of lighting). Looks like the '70s to us...
Hand made of rough tan clay, this vase weighs a whopping 8 pounds and is in excellent condition, with one small glazed-over nick, done in the kiln, located on the bottom edge of the center band (shown in our photos). The vase has a dry bottom edge and foot ring, with a glazed center that is incised in script with the artist's name "Stearns." It stands 10 1/2 inches tall on a 5 1/2 inch diameter base and has a circumference of 32 inches around the equator. It's an expertly made studio pottery piece, one that will stand out in any setting.
