This handsome stoneware jug was wheel-thrown by ceramic artist Ernest Gentry. Born and raised in Mississippi, he has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of Mississippi and a Master of Fine Arts from Utah State University. Following graduate school Ernest taught and worked at Red Kiln Pottery and The Pioneer Craft House, both located in Salt Lake City. He is currently an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in Ceramics in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Utah. Three of his ceramics are in the Rosenfield Collection of the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY.

This tall, heavy jug, made of slightly rough, speckled beige clay, has wonderful glaze treatments that make each area different as the jug is turned. The interior is glazed in a shiny chocolate brown glaze that also coats the rim of the mouth partially washes onto the short, pulled handle. Ernest's finger marks are evident on the gently sloping ovoid body and his mark, a raised E in an impressed circle, is stamped below the base of the handle.

Weighing in at 4 3/4 pounds, the jug measures 10 1/2 inches tall, about 22 inches in circumference around the shoulder (6 1/2 inches across) and stands on a 5 1/2 inch diameter base. In excellent condition, it's a contemporary art pottery rendition of the old whiskey jug that looks great anywhere you place it in your home.
