Shorebird Decoy Semipalmated Plover Gregg Ewell Carving 1981 Delaware

Gregg Emerson Ewell (1959-2022) was a very talented Millsboro, Delaware decoy carver, winning a World Championship at the Ward Foundation's Wildfowl Carving Championships for his Bufflehead decoy. He also placed in top categories for Eider and Red-breasted Mergansers decoys. His decoys were proudly sold in the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum gift shop. We've included a photo of Gregg with his First Place ribbon in one of the competitions at Ward's.

This petite shorebird on stand is an unusual one in the field of decoys: a semipalmated plover. The name "semipalmated" comes from its partially webbed toes, which have adapted for walking on mudflats and wet sand. They are highly distinct from other shorebirds. 

The round pine wooden base is hand signed in script "Gregg E. Ewell 1981" and "Semipalmated Plover." Gregg's initials "GEE" are carved into the bottom of the decoy itself. The bird has painted eyes and is wearing his mating plumage.

From beak to tail, the plover measures 6 1/2 inches long, the size of the actual bird. He measures 7 inches tall with the stand and base and weighs a mere 1/4 pound. In excellent condition, this carving displays handsomely. This is a chance to own a decoy by a World Champion carver.
