T & V Antique French Art Nouveau Limoges Centerpiece Bowl
This gorgeous centerpiece bowl is fine porcelain by Tressemanes & Vogt, a prominent porcelain manufacturer in Limoges, France. While footed Limoges bowls commonly have painted fruits and/or flowers, the mushroom/woodland motif on this one is rare. The Art Nouveau style based on nature and the French countryside provides a French Cottage appeal.
The interior of the bowl is painted with a beautiful powder pink, with ten mushrooms scattered about, some of which are painted in gold. The soft green wash and earthy tones on the outside of the bowl suggest a more artistic, less mass-produced design. The large mushrooms nestled among the green ferns are simply a delight.
The rim of the bowl is scalloped, embossed and gilded. The rim of the base is a deep forest green. The green overglaze mark on the bottom reads "T&V" (framed in a lozenge) and "LIMOGES FRANCE DEPOSE" (déposé means that the shape of this piece was patented in France). This mark was used from 1892-1907. The bowl is artist signed just above the foot, painted in black letters.
The bowl measures 9 1/2 inches wide across the top and 4 1/2 inches tall, with a base 5 1/4 inches in diameter. It weighs 2 pounds and is in like-new, exceptional condition, with no wear to the gold trim and no damage whatsoever. It's a stunning piece of French porcelain that will be a treasured heirloom.
❆❆A bit of history: In 1870, Gustave Vogt (1849-1937) took over the Limoges branch of the original Vogt manufactory established in 1850. He became partners with Emilien Tressemanes in the early 1880's. As Tressemanes & Vogt, they made high quality porcelain for export to the USA, distributed no doubt through their New York office. Tressemanes retired in 1907 and Gustave Vogt became sole owner and changed the name to Porcelaine Gustave Vogt.
