Charles Pinet, the artist who etched this view of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, was born in Paris on January 28, 1867. After graduating college, he became a student of famed French artist Gustave Moreau when he settled in Paris, where he devoted himself to etching. He actively participated in the salons of the Artistes Français, of which he was a member since 1905, and showed his works in various exhibitions. He died on August 10, 1932.
The artwork is etched in black on cream wove paper that's slightly yellowed over the years. The title written in the plate lower left "Notre Dame Paris Abside" {The Apse of Notre Dame Paris} with the artist's blind stamp monogram 'CP' to the right of the title (see photo with arrow). His signature 'C. Pinet' in graphite is on the lower right.
The framed size of the artwork is 13 inches high by 17 inches wide. The narrow wood frame with glass is painted a matte faded black with raised gold trim. The backing paper has been torn and there is a hanging wire installed. The print is in good condition, with two smudges on the right side, one upper, one lower (shown in our photos). They are not obtrusive but can be covered with a narrow mat if desired. The frame has some rubs along the sides but is along in good condition. This is a striking etching, created by Charles Pinet nearly 100 years ago.
