An outstanding original oil painting from the late 1800's, this realist seascape depicts a longshoreman by the sea. Wearing a soft brown hat and a jaunty red neckerchief, he is leaning on a wooden buoy smoking his pipe, perhaps waiting for his ship to come in. In the background are two boats in the water with seagulls wheeling overhead. It was done on a 1/8 inch thick wood panel and signed lower right "J.R. Lendt." We think it's either French or German.
The painting's frame is coved wood with a beautiful gilt finish. The edges are painted a dark brown. There is a sturdy hanger wire installed on the back. Measurements are 21 1/2 inches high, 16 inches wide and 1 inch deep. It weighs 3 3/4 pounds and is in excellent condition, with no damage, ready to be displayed and admired.
IMPORTANT Lighting note: Our photos were taken under bright studio lighting. We recommend a picture light above it. It will appear quite a bit darker without it. There are terrific battery-operated (cord-free) ones available online. Alternatively, hang the painting in a bright room, but not in direct sunlight.
