Bison Lithograph 1800s signed C de Last
A striking print of a bison, this handsome framed artwork was lithographed and published by Charles-Philibert du Saillant, Comte de Lasteyrie (1759-1849). He was a French lithographer who established the first lithographic press in Paris in 1815 and signed his works "C de Last." This print is signed lower right in the plate.
Jean-Charles Werner (1798–1856) was a French natural history artist for the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris, where he contributed some 350 paintings of animals between 1826 and 1856. The print is marked in the plate "Werner del." lower left.
On the lower center of the lithograph, above the title "Bison," is the notation "1/10 de la grand nat." which indicates the print is 1/10 the size of Werner's original. The print size is 7 3/4 inches by 10 1/4 inches; the framed size is 11 5/8 by 14 1/4 inches by 5/8 inch and it weighs 1 3/4 pounds.
The print is under glass with a 1 1/2 inch wide wood frame that's painted black and has an inner gilded liner. The dust paper on the back is intact and there's a wire installed so it's ready to hang. This wonderful old framed French print is in excellent condition and is an eye-catching artwork.
✱✱"Del." is the abbreviation of the Latin word delineavit, which means "he/she drew [it]". It's often found in the lower margin or corner of an engraving or etching to identify the artist whose original drawing the print is based on. Thus, Jean-Charles Werner drew the original for this print.
✱✱There is another bison lithograph of a young female by C. de Last that was also drawn by Werner in the collection of the Amon Carter Museum of Art in Fort Worth, Texas.
