Charles Lee Burbage (1918-2012) of Annapolis, Maryland, hand carved and hand painted these solid wood duck decoys. The mallard drake, with its green head and flattened yellow beak, measures 9 inches long, 4 3/4 inches high and 4 1/4 inches across the breast. It's signed on the bottom of its tail "Mallard by C.L. Burbage." This duck weighs 9 ounces.

The northern shoveler, also a male, has its characteristically shaped long black beak, green head and chestnut colored sides. His head is turned to his left and his small golden yellow eyes are painted on. Live shovelers are smaller than mallards; this one is a bit smaller too, measuring 8 1/4 inches long, 4 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches across the breast. This duck is unsigned but obviously the work of Charles Burbage. The carving weighs 10.8 ounces.

Both ducks are in very good condition; there are no cracks and only minor nicks to the paint. The shoveler has a strip of wood missing on the bottom (shown) apparently done when someone peeled off the green felt originally glued there. The paint on both is nicely detailed and both are a good size for display.
