Artist LEON AZOULAY Microcalligraphy Serigraph

Item number: PYH 5328
US$475.00

Artist Leon Azoulay, born in Morocco in 1945, lives in Israel and is passionate about the Bible. All of his artworks are texts of the Hebrew Scriptures, composed of tiny original Hebrew letters in a fascinating technique known as microcalligraphy. His work has been exhibited in France, Canada and the U.S.

This is a serigraph of the first 50 chapters from the book of Psalms. Psalms in Hebrew means "songs of Praise" in the Greek translation psalmoi (ψαλμοί), meaning "instrumental music" and "the words accompanying the music." The letters in this artwork form a quartet of musicians playing instruments and presumably singing songs of praise, and colored in rust, blue and green. At each corner, there are hand drawn outlines of leaves that were filled in with watercolors in shades of pale green, pale pink and brick red.

It's a limited edition print, numbered in pencil 111/295 lower right and hand signed, again in pencil, "Azoulay Leon." The framed size is 18 1/2 inches by 24 inches. The artwork is surrounded by a 1 1/2 inch wide, single cut mat in light gray with a linen finish. The sight size is 13 1/4 by 18 1/2 inches.

The 1 1/8 inch wide wood frame is painted "antiqued" gold and has a clean, intact dust paper on the back, along with a hanging wire. The piece weighs nearly 4 1/2 pounds and is in excellent condition, including the glass cover, with no damage or wear. A truly unusual artwork, this colorful serigraph will be a focal point in any room.
