This superb pottery casserole was made by self-taught husband and wife artists Winton and Rosa Eugene who have their studio in the historic town of Cowpens, South Carolina. Winton throws the pottery on a potter's wheel and decorates it, while Rosa glazes the pieces. The photo we've included show the couple in front of their wood-burning kiln.
Each of the Eugene's pieces reflect the past and are one of a kind, both in size and decorations. This open (non-lidded) casserole is made of a heavy, creamy white clay. It has a striated and speckled seafoam green glaze that coats the inside of the bowl and a wide band at the exterior base. There are two different hand painted vignettes; one is a flowering dogwood tree and the other is an old brown wooden barn with a tree on either side. Each different side displays beautifully.
The casserole has two pulled handles flat against the sides of the bowl. Winton's initials are below one of the handles, while the dry bottom has several markings etched into the clay: W-R Eugene Cowpens SC 9/93. This is one of their early pieces of pottery; the couple retired to Cowpens in 1985,
The casserole is in like-new condition, with no flaws or post-production damage. It is 3 1/4 inches high, 7 3/4 inches in diameter and weighs 2 1/2 pounds. Although it is fully functional (oven, microwave and dishwasher safe), its unique beauty and folk art charm make it so delightful to display.
>>>The Eugenes received honorary doctoral degrees in Fine Art from the University of South Carolina. Their work has been exhibited in many museums and art galleries. Here is a partial list of their recent accomplishments, among many, many others:
