French Antique Sarreguemines Plate
$75.00

This antique French dessert plate made by Utzschneider & Cie in the "Types Bretons" pattern. The Bretons live in Brittany in northwestern France and are so often pictured on Quimper pottery. The transfer printed scene depicts a boatman holding an oar and carrying his gargoulette (water jug). He's dressed in the traditional 19th century sailor's outfit, topped with a beret. He is chatting with a comely French mademoiselle, also dressed in 1800's clothing, wearing a conical, lace trimmed cap and carrying a parasol.

The central scene has these words printed beneath it:

MARINIER DES BORDS DE LA LOIRE, NANTES (BOATMAN FROM THE BANKS OF THE LOIRE, NANTES)

It's surrounded by crowned coats of arms, fruits and flowers and a wonderful scene with an anchor, crossed oars, a chicken and a rooster and baskets of fish. All of this is on pure white faience. The mark on the underside Includes "U & Cie" (for Utzschneider and Company), "TYPES BRETONS" (Breton Types) and "SARREGUEMINES." This mark was used circa 1900.

The plate measures 8 inches across and weighs 9 ounces. Save for a tiny old chip on the left upper edge it is in excellent condition, with no hairlines, cracks or stains. It's a beautiful antique plate that displays beautifully.

Navajo Sand Painting by R.M. Lee
$110.00

Sand paintings originated for use in healing ceremonies; they were destroyed at the end of the ritual. Navajo sand paintings began to be "permatized" and sold commercially, made with a technique dating to the 1930s when a pair of white sign painters, E. George de Ville and his wife Mae Allendale, introduced the practice in Gallup, New Mexico. (Authentic Navajo sand paintings made for ceremonial purposes are never sold and seldom ever seen by outsiders.) After particle board was invented during World War II, it became the typical surface used for the commercially sold paintings, which are created by trickling colored sands through the fingers onto the epoxy covered board.

This large and intricately detailed sand painting was created by R.M. Lee of New Mexico, a member of a prominent Navajo family whose members include potters, artists and designers/makers of jewelry. The design uses the radial format with the Four Yei Dancers, representing the four spirit deities, whirling around the four arms that represent the Four Sacred Mountains of their traditional homeland. The very center represents the opening in the earth where the original emergence of the people from underground occurred.

This artwork's colors are still strong; the turquoise, brown, yellow and sand shades echo the desert, unlike the pastels of the 1980's. It measures 13 1/2 inches square and is securely framed with a one inch wide wood molding in a warm brown color. It weighs 1 3/4 pounds and is in excellent condition, with a hanging wire already attached. Handwritten in ink on the back is "The Four Yei Dancers {signed} RM Lee." With its contemporary art look, this sand painting will enhance any decor from modern to Southwest.

Note: Although we have used Navajo as the common name of this Native American nation, their self-proclaimed name is Diné, which means 'The People' in the Navajo language. The word "Navajo" comes from a Spanish word meaning "stealer."

Terracotta Studio Art Pottery Vase
$95.00

This tall, heavy vase was handmade of speckled terracotta clay that is rough to the touch. Areas of the upper half were partially covered in a black glaze that created undulating swirls. The black glaze continues onto the rolled rim and completely covers the inside of the vase. The piece is also decorated with lines of tiny impressed dots like stippling. Turning the vase gives you a different view with each turn.

The vase tapers down to a 3 1/2 inch diameter round base with no foot that is signed in brown script "Rowell." It stands 12 3/4 inches tall, measures about 6 inches across at the midline and has a 3 inch mouth opening. Weighing in at a sturdy 4 1/4 pounds, it's in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, etc. The interesting surfaces and sculptural shape make this vase a real standout.
