Ms. Miller was also a well-known stand-up comedian, who started doing stage comedy at the age of 70; we've included a photo of her at one of her performances. An accompanying card from the artist states that the painting was done in oil, is titled "Apples and Lemons" and had an original price of $175.00. The red apples in the blue and white footed bowl, the lemons piled on a green dish and the espresso in the green cup and saucer are all arranged against a black background that makes the colors even more vivid.

The painting on panel measures 14 1/4 inches tall by 19 3/4 inches wide and 3/4 of an inch thick. This make-do lining exemplifies the thriftiness that was demanded during the Great Depression, when poverty was all too often the norm. "Use it up, wear it out, make do, do without" was the mantra of those years. "Make-do's" are very collectible and have a book all their own (shown) titled "They Made Do" by Jill Peterson.

The basket is round at the top, measuring 11 1/2 inches across each way. Over the period of a week, the mold dries and starts dissolving, which allows the tile to release from the mold and be fired. The technique creates intricate bas-relief surfaces like the one here. It was expertly carved and once the Indian is balanced on the base, it will rock back and forth with the slightest breath or breeze. We believe it was made in the Northeast United States, probably New York around the Mohawk River area (hence the haircut) and in the first half of the twentieth century. The great appeal of his decoys like this swan is that they embody nature's beauty in their shapes and surfaces. They are the antithesis of smooth, shiny, painted decoys (note the lack of eyes). Chris Boone personally selected the piece of North Carolina wood he would use, taking into consideration the bark, splits, knots and marks that he left as is to make each sculpture one of a kind. Reed (1908-1989) was a skilled wood engraver and printer with a wonderful sense of humor. The technique he developed uses individual wood blocks for each color-a method that produces very sharp and clear images, like the two original prints here. Reed illustrated more than 40 books, including MOTHER GOOSE AND NURSERY RHYMES in 1963, which received many awards and honors. His work has been displayed at the Library of Congress in Washington, the Victoria and Albert Museums in London and other institutions.

This pair of prints display Reed's personal style, somewhat reminiscent of the works of his contemporary, artist Peter Ompir, who, like Reed, also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Both of these prints depict a man with his tools and accessories. The draftsman in 18th century clothing holds his T-square, triangle, books and papers, while the somewhat hapless-looking fellow in the stovepipe hat holding a large hammer is possibly a blacksmith. The hooked end of the handle, with a carving usually referred to as a bird's head effigy, was useful for hanging the ladle on the edge of a pot or bowl. This one resembles the head of a goose in profile and is a bit more shapely and detailed than is usual. Carved from a solid piece of wood, the ladle is well balanced and the thin rim that comes to a peak at the end of the bowl is masterfully carved. Ladles like this are often attributed to various Native American tribes, from the Iroquois in New York and Ontario to Pacific Northwest Coast peoples, but it's a form that easily could have been used by settlers in those areas, also.

At some point in its centuries of use, the ladle was painted in red, which has alligatored and darkened in spots to appear a dark brown. It's solid pine throughout, with a medium brown finish that is finely alligatored on all outer surfaces.

Handwritten on the back of the mirror panel in pencil is '"Glyta Klansky Tigerton, Wis" followed by letters and numbers. Glyta Klansky (1903-1996) was born in Morris, Wisconsin, married Arthur Klansky in Wittenberg, WI, and passed away in Tigerton, WI...each town 7 miles from the other. We can imagine Glyta's father...or grandfather...making this for her in the small town they lived in (the population of Morris in 1910 was 710), adding details that she might not notice but satisfied his desire for good workmanship.

The piece stands 11 inches tall to the top of the mirror frame; the top of the chest itself is 7 inches high. The drawers are each 1 5/8 inches deep; the overall width is 8 inches at the overhanging top and 7 3/8 inches across the bottom. From front to back it measures 3 1/2 inches and it weighs 1 1/2 pounds. There are no stops on the drawers, so they slide all the way out easily. This is not dollhouse piece but was meant to hold dolly-sized things.

For a child's plaything, this bureau is in remarkably good condition. There is a tiny chip at the top left corner of the mirror frame (shown), not obvious as it's the same color as the rest. The mirror has darkened over the last century but is intact. The bottom drawer had a chunk knocked out of the right front corner and was "repaired" (shown in our photos) and Glyta couldn't resist scribbling in pencil on some of its surfaces. There are a few small darkened areas on the top of the chest but there is no other damage and this chest of drawers is a country primitive delight that can hold lots of small items, but also stand on its own and be admired.

© PrimpingYourHome.com

PYH 5535

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0721/9101/7147/files/ChatGPT_Image_Mar_1_2026_03_21_44_PM.png?v=1779994098
handmade-girl-folk-art-doll-fabric-and-oilcloth
Handmade Girl Folk Art Doll Fabric and Oilcloth

Sadie is a vintage handmade doll, an African-American girl with so much charm. It's not surprising, then, that the hand-lettered word on the plain back of the wall plate is "HANDEGEMALT" which is German for "Hand Painted."

The plate measures 12 inches in diameter and 3/4 of an inch high. It weighs about 11 ounces and is in excellent condition, with no damage or visible wear. Ready to hang by the disc plate hanger attached to the upper back, it makes a handsome folk art display on the wall, a shelf or a table.

© PrimpingYourHome.com

PYH 5367

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0721/9101/7147/files/ChatGPT_Image_Mar_10_2026_09_47_34_AM.png?v=1779993014
antique-framed-print-of-velvet-scoter
Antique Framed Print of Velvet Scoter

This antique hand-colored print of an 1855 wood engraving is from "A History of British Birds" authored by Rev. Francis Orpen Morris (1810-1893). First published in 6 volumes by Groombridge and Sons, Paternoster Row, London in the years 1851-1857, the book featured ornithological illustrations by Alexander Francis Lydon, the British natural history engraver. Lydon worked closely with Benjamin Fawcett, the printer of the books, and collaborated with Rev. It's surrounded by a 1 inch wide matte black frame with a gold inner liner. The sight size is 5 3/4 inches by 7 1/2 inches; the framed size measures 8 inches by 10 inches and weighs 14 ounces. The words "VELVET SCOTER" are printed at the bottom.
