The hooked end of the handle, with a carving usually referred to as a bird's head effigy, was useful for hanging the ladle on the edge of a pot or bowl. This one resembles the head of a goose in profile and is a bit more shapely and detailed than is usual. Carved from a solid piece of wood, the ladle is well balanced and the thin rim that comes to a peak at the end of the bowl is masterfully carved. Published in 1791, it describes the habits of Tam, a farmer who often gets drunk with his friend Souter Johnie (a souter is a cobbler) in a public house in the Scottish town of Ayr. This wonderfully detailed stoneware jug by William Ridgway and Co. (1830-1854) of Hanley, Staffordshire, England, depicts scenes in relief from the poem. The bottom of the pitcher has a mark stamped into the clay that reads "Published by W. RIDGWAY & CO. On the other side, Tam is on his "grey mare Meg," fleeing the witches flying after him, one with her hand on Meg's tail (meg is also called Maggie in the poem). The high, arched handle shows a witch's hand clutching the mare's tail; she "left poor Maggie scarce a stump."

This handsome jug has endured a knock on the spout's rim in the past. There are tiny hairlines near the base of the handle, one above the garland that runs under the mouth and one on the bottom. These are surface tears, done in the kiln and glazed over afterwards. All of this is shown in our photos (double click on each image to see it at its largest). None of it affects the sturdiness of the pitcher but we mention them for accuracy---it's otherwise in excellent condition. It measures 12 inches in length, about 3/4 of an inch thick, 4 inches across the cow bone mount and weighs 10 ounces. The spikes stand 4 1/2 inches tall. Although heavily used (we cleaned off the dirt), it's in excellent condition with a handsome patina and no missing spikes, nails or pieces of wood. For collectors of African material cultural artifacts, this is a museum-worthy collector piece with strong visual appeal.

© PrimpingYourHome.com

PYH 5814

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0721/9101/7147/files/5814-AfricanCarvedWoodenFiberCombwithForgedIronSpikes-Up-Facing-Front-Handle-inCase-1536x1024.jpg?v=1778766364
antique-french-faience-lidded-pitcher-with-pewter-thumb-lifter
Antique French Faience Lidded Pitcher with Pewter Thumb Lifter

This exquisite French faience pichet (pitcher) dates from circa 1880. The fluted, pear-shaped baluster body, arched handle and domed lid are covered with a pure white tin glaze over earthenware. It's hand painted with a profusion of intricate, Rouen-style floral designs. The handle is decorated with blue rococo scrolls on each side and a ribbon and dot design in pale yellow and brown on the face of the handle.

The front side is decorated with a crowned shield---deep blue with three gold fleurs-de-lis arranged two over one---the “Ancient Arms of France” used by the French monarchy from the late Middle Ages onward, especially associated with the House of Bourbon. It's surrounded by a double gold chain suspending a gold medallion. The lid is raised and lowered by means of a pewter thumb-lifter known in French as a Lève-pouce, this one shaped as a diving dolphin with its tail in the air. The hinged lid allows for easy one-handed pouring.

The polychrome colors of cerise and pale chartreuse were developed by a process called petit-feu (low-fire) in the second half of the 1700's by Paul Hannong, a circa 1732-1760 prominent French ceramicist based in Strasbourg, France. The conjoined, hand painted blue PH mark on the bottom may be the initials of the decorator and/or an apocryphal mark in tribute to Paul Hannong.

This pitcher is in superb condition with a few tiny flakes, a small chip on the bottom edge of the base and an extremely minute, short hairline. Made the French firm Keller & Guérin, famous for their high quality ceramics, the cream colored (off-white) earthenware is ornamented with a central design on both sides featuring a pink cabbage rose and spring florals. This pattern was originally adapted from the Strasbourg faience factories of the 1700s. The elaborate scrolled handles on either end have a single bluebell with leaves beneath each one. The high sides of the planter are scalloped and trimmed with magenta, as are the handles. The flowers are transfers, while the trim is hand painted.

The printed black mark on the bottom is a double-bordered circle topped with a crown. The crown is flanked by the letter "K" on the left and "G" on the right. Inside the circle are the words "Luneville France." The number 9 is on the left in the circle, the number 2 on the right, indicating this piece was made in 1892. ⚜️K& G closed in 1981. If you read elsewhere that these numbers on the mark are "later ones," this is obviously not true. There would be no 1992.

Impressed in the clay on the upper left are the words "Sᵗ Clement France" which is historically significant. In the year 1892 Keller & Guérin, who already owned the massive factory in Lunéville, bought out the neighboring Saint-Clément pottery works. The two rival companies merged their clay recipes and pattern molds. Because this jardinière dates precisely to 1892, it was produced right during this transition. The wet clay was pressed into a mold at the Saint-Clément workshop (located just 7 miles away). Before the piece was fired, a worker impressed the "Sᵗ Clement" script to indicate who made the physical shape. The printed mark indicates that the decorating and glazes were done in Lunéville. The two marks together document the exact year the two French potteries united into a single brand.

This faience piece is in excellent condition, with two tiny flakes off one of the handles (pictured) and just some shelf dirt on the dry foot. There is no damage, wear, stains or crazing; it's so clean it can hold fruit and nuts as well as flowers or plants. It measures 11 1/2 inches long, 4 1/2 inches deep and weighs 2 1/2 pounds.
